In the late ’70s, Cheryl and I moved to Moses Lake, WA, to start a church. One of the first things that must be addressed when starting a church is to determine where you are going to meet. I investigated every lead I could find. Someone suggested that I check out an educational building at a specific church. I found an open door and approached the janitor, who was cleaning the floors. After introducing myself, I explained what I was doing and asked if he thought the church might be interested in renting this facility when it was not in use. His demeanor was less than friendly.
At this time, I believed that this denomination did not preach the Gospel. Realizing there was no chance for a rental arrangement, I thought I would talk to the man about Christ. I am sure I came across pushy; that was how I believed it was done. So, part of the atmosphere was most likely a product of my ignorance.
“I would like to ask you something?” He acknowledged my request, so I continued, “If you were to die today, do you know for sure you would go to Heaven?” The gentleman was annoyed at my question. His response, “I don’t know, and I think there is something wrong with anyone who thinks they know!” Like a quick draw artist, I whipped out my pocket New Testament and flashed it open to 1 John 5:13, pointed at the verse and began to explain, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Energetically, I offered, “John said we could know we have eternal life. Wouldn’t you like to know?” He was not in the least interested in knowing and turned away from me. Feeling somewhat puzzled and at the same time very grateful that I had the assurance of eternal life, I headed out to my car.
The question for you today is, “Do you know for sure?” If not, let me know, and it will be my privilege to patiently and thoroughly explain how you can know. If you know you have eternal life, take a moment and give thanks!
