It is common to experience anything from latent to full blown anxiety when life changes. Let those changes be a new experience coupled with a significant lack of information and various degrees of emotional discomfort are to be expected.
There is not "a particular way" that everyone will or should react to change, and especially when that change comes with a threat. The key factor is not so much the change or even the threat associated with a new environment; the key factor is how we process and respond while we are going through those changes and challenges.
How often have we heard first responders describing a life-threatening situation with the phrase “…then my training kicked in and I…” As followers of Christ, what is our training for life’s challenging circumstances? For today, I think one of the best answers to that question is found in Romans 12:9-13 where the advice is good for us all.
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. (NIV)
The “others focus” of this passage can and will guide us with more purpose and confidence through the current challenges. Finally, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
