Like Barred Gates

Think of it, just three months ago, most of us had never heard of “shelter at home” orders. Today, we are about six weeks into experiencing “social distancing.” Data comes at us faster than we can process. Conspiracy theories abound regarding the source and treatment of the Novelle Corona Virus. Monitoring the progress on our favorite news outlet is arguably addictive and leans heavily toward depressing.

However, God has made humanity quite resilient. More and more stories surface of acts of kindness, sacrifice, and love toward each other in this unprecedented experience. Friends helping and encouraging one another lift our spirits and draw us. Friendships in action are the pearls of great price hidden in the landscape of life. (Matt. 13:46) When we discover it, we invest heavily in having access to the treasure of true friendship.

Under the steady pressure of our battle with the unseen enemy producing COVID19, we trample the treasured friendships found at home underfoot. (Matt. 7:6) Unconsciously, we hold to double standards in our interactions. We treat virtual strangers with more grace and patience than our own family. We must value relationships with family above all other human interactions. If I see my family as intrinsically valuable, I will treat them with kindness and generosity. If blinded to their fundamental value, the treasure of their love can be lost.

“A brother [family member] wronged is more unyielding than a fortified city; disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel.” (Prov.18:19 NIV)

I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior when I was a teen. A friend had invited me to attend church to help out in a Sunday School attendance drive. At the end of the worship service I asked the Pastor how I could know for sure I would go to Heaven. He had someone show me from the Scriptures how to receive Christ and from that day to this, I have had an assurance of Christ as my Savior and Heaven as my eternal home.

Within a few weeks I sensed a building desire to enter into full time ministry. My church observed me and confirmed the call. Upon graduation from High School, I enrolled in Bible College and I have been in ministry ever since. I was ordained to the ministry by my home church in Texas in 1974. It has been my privilege to be Pastor of Preaching and Teaching at Family Bible since 2005.

Cheryl and I were married in 1973. God has blessed us with two children, Rachel and David, and four grandsons.

Favorite part of ministry? - Researching and discussing questions about the Bible.

Favorite verse? - "Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm.  Let nothing move you.  Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58
