I’ve been around for almost seven decades, during which the most common word used to described all those times is “uncertain.” As we wander through the book of Ecclesiastes, we have heard Solomon agree and felt him almost bury us in examples of the unpredictable, unkind, and unfair circumstances of life. But Solomon is not trying to discourage us. He is trying to position us to find the good times and enjoy them, even when we are surrounded by the bad.
In chapter three, verses one through eight, Solomon lists fourteen examples of contrasting seasons in life. His point is that we have to align our actions with the particular season. One case focuses on planting and harvesting. If I try to plant at harvest time or harvest at planting time, I will fail. Solomon punctuates the seasonal alignment concept with, “God has made everything beautiful in its time.” If I can discern the times aligning my focus, my efforts with the season, in Solomon’s words, he describes the outcome, “I know there is nothing better for people than to e happy and to do good while they live.” (3:12 NIV)
Solomon has more to say about discerning which time. We will consider that tomorrow, God willing.
