Susan Gifford, the host of the children’s TV program Romper Room, would gaze into the magic mirror through which she could see all the children watching at home. “I see Suzy and Larry and Margaret and John, and there are Richard and Loretta.” I do not recall believing she could actually see the children who were watching at home, but if she had ever said, “I see Ronald,” I would have converted!
In the struggle to forgive those deeper wounds, some find it helpful to understand the offender’s perspective. Of course, you will not agree with their perspective, nor will you necessarily follow the logic. Broken people do hurtful things. Not always, but sometimes understanding what the offender’s thought process removes a little of the sting.
Take up the magic mirror and gaze into the darkness of their soul. It does not help everyone, but it is worth a try!
