I have named this blog CV 19 Daily. Hopefully, these comments will bring a ray of hope to us who are under skies overcast with uncertainty.
“Perfect love drives out fear” 1 John 4:18 (NIV). Regarding this verse C.S. Lewis muses, “But so do several other things—ignorance, alcohol, passion, presumption, and stupidity. It is very desirable that we should all advance to that perfection of love in which we shall fear no longer; but it is very undesirable, until we have reached that stage, that we should allow any inferior agent to cast out our fear.” (The World’s Last Night)
John explains further by giving the reason that perfect love drives out fear, “because fear has to do with punishment.” My reactions to fearful situations can be dulled, as Lewis implied, by things other than truth. But those other things do not drive out fear, they at best dull fear.
Until I “reach that stage” and am confident in the love and care of our risen Savior, I will wonder if I am being punished when fear assails. Jesus promises, “I will never leave you!” (Joshua 1:5)
