If contemplated, the words are profound, moving, “I saw something meaningless under the sun: There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother.” (Eccl. 4:7-8 NIV). All alone, no amount of success, of any kind, can ease the pain of aloneness, not even crowds comfort a person who is alone.
Alone is contrary to our design parameters. Made without sin, Adam awoke to find himself in the garden furnished by God for the enjoyment of humanity. God gazed upon his image, Adam, reclining in the dazzling beauty of the Garden of Eden. There were no needs, no threats, only beauty, and provision. Watching Adam admire his surroundings, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” (Gen. 2:18) God caused him to sleep and made a helper perfectly suited to Adam.
Solomon’s wealthy man was depriving himself of the enjoyment of wife, or son, or brother. Unless his labors, under the sun, were with and for someone else, alone replaced joy. No one has to be alone. Be a friend, and you will find a friend. (Eccl. 4:8)
